This unlikely icon of the Christmas season is back. The Grinch may have started out on the wrong foot, but spoiler alert, when his heart grew so did ours! Now we invite the Grinch into our house each year during Christmas to remind ourselves what this holiday is truly about. From grouchy to great, we see the grinch evolve into someone who understands why we gather together in celebration during the season of giving. Christmas isn’t about what we get. It doesn’t come from a store. Christmas means a bit more! So gather together with your loved ones this season and share with them the laughter and warmth that could persuade even the grumpiest grinch to grow into a giver.
This DIY Grinch ornament is a great way to start. A handmade gift can add a sentimental touch to your giving season and a Grinch ornament can be brought out each year reminding us of our connections with friends and family. Also, it might look really nice hung upon a Grinch Tree at a Grinch party.
So, don’t stand there puzzled and puzzled ‘til your puzzler is sore, just keep scrolling for the tutorial on how to make a Grinch inspired Christmas Ornament.
DIY Grinch Christmas Ornament Supplies
- Green 120mm ornament
- White boa
- Red crushed velvet fabric
- 2” white pom pom
- Thin gold cord & large eye needle
- Vinyl Grinch face or black paint pen
- Scissors
- Glue gun
- Needle & red thread
- Sewing machine & thread (optional)
- Grinch faces PDF or SVG
- Santa hat PDF
STEP ONE: Apply vinyl face to ornament (get the SVG file HERE) or use a paint pen and THIS PDF TEMPLATE to draw a face. We placed our face about 2 inches from the ornament topper.
STEP TWO: Use pattern (HERE) to cut two hat pieces from fabric. (TIP: This type of fabric can be slippery so cut one piece at a time.)
STEP THREE: With right sides of the fabric together, glue (or machine stitch) pieces to each other with a ½ inch seam allowance. Turn hat so right sides are out. (TIP: Push hat point out with a chopstick or the eraser end of a pencil.)
STEP FOUR: Glue hat to ornament. (TIP: Glue hat to ball at side seams first then work on securing the rest of the hat to the ball.)
STEP FIVE: Cut a short length of boa to fit around the ornament. Glue it to the ornament along the edge of the fabric.
STEP SIX: Fold and shape hat. Glue pom-pom to point. (TIP: With the needle and thread, add a few hand stitches to stabilize shape if needed.)
STEP SEVEN: Cut 12 inches of gold cord. Thread needle. Feel for the ornament topper through the hat fabric. Run a gold cord through fabric and topper hole. Knot ends to form a hanger.
Repeat the process with the other face images and create a trio of ornaments each with a different Grinchy personality.
