- Lanterns (look for ones with removable glass window panels)
- Printable templates
- Paint pens (fine and broad tip)
- Copper acrylic paint
- Glass paint
- Paintbrush and sponge brush
- Tape (optional)
Thoroughly clean the front of the glass window paint so there is no dirt or grease. This may affect your painted look.
Download and print the templates and cut to size. The template is designed as 2×3, but could be sized and trimmed to work with as a 1×1 square. Remove the glass panels and lay on top of your printed templates.
Use a fine point paint pen to trace the design onto the glass. Remember, the template is just a guide! Feel free to invent your own design or use serendipitous mistakes to create new looks!
Use a broad point paint pen (of the same brand) and fill in any large areas. Go slow to thoroughly fill it in without streaks.
Once dry, turn over all the panels and use a sponge brush to apply the glass paint to the areas that will be seen through the window.
While the glass panels are drying, use a dry brush technique to apply hints of copper paint onto the lantern. This will instantly age the lanterns!
Once everything is dry, place the panels back into the lantern and it’s ready to put on display! With the panels painted these lanterns are beautiful enough to display in the day or the night!
Slip a candle inside the lantern and display out once it gets dark. The soft glow from the candle will illuminate the orange and purple paint and your design will be a black silhouette.
