DIY Rainbow Fringe Backdrop Supplies
Gather these supplies together then follow along with the instructions below.
- Craft knife
- Self-healing mat (or old cardboard)
- Command Hooks
- Painter’s tape (not pictured)
STEP ONE: Cut fencing to desired length and width. We cut ours to 4’ x 2’.
Note: in the pictures we are using a much smaller piece.
STEP TWO: Cut the table covers into 1” x 108” strips.
TIP: Save some time. Don’t unfold the table cover. You can cut through multiple layers at a time, especially if using a rotary cutter.
STEP THREE: Tie table cover strips onto fencing using a single overhand knot. We used twelve tablecloths, each color spanning about a 4” section of fencing.
STEP FOUR: Keep tying strips until desired fullness is achieved.
TIP: You don’t need to fill in every square. We periodically skipped a square or two.
STEP FIVE: Adhere decals to foamboard and trim using a craft knife.
STEP SIX: Hang rainbow on the wall using Command Hooks. “Fringe” tablecloth strips to give backdrop some texture and volume.
STEP SEVEN: Attach clouds to rainbow and wall using painter’s tape.
TIP: To give front clouds some depth, stack and glue scraps of foam board together to use as risers. Just adhere riser stack to back of front clouds and adhere to back clouds.
Every rainbow needs a pot of gold at the end. Fill a large black plastic cauldron with Gold Lunch Paper Plates to mimic giant gold coins.
To construct, place boxes in the bottom of the cauldron and top with a foam board circle. Trim plates flat along one side. Hot glue plates to the foam board and add green table cover offcut strips as filler.
All the colors in full fringe! You’ll want to leave this decoration up forever, but be sure to take advantage of it during St Patrick’s Day as a colorful selfie station.
Give your lucky Leprechauns some festive Irish fashion to model in front of your rainbow backdrop. Start with a St. Patrick’s Day Kilt and top it off with a St. Patrick’s Day Plaid Hat. Both are sure to put your friends and family in the Irish spirit.
