DIY Sofia Pinata




  • Sofia the first fluffy party decoration
  • White Cardstock approximately 5” x 7”
  • Strips of Newspaper
  • White Glue
  • Purple Spray Paint
  • Duct tape (preferably purple)
  • Inflated Balloon
  • Disposable containers for mixing the glue
  • Scissors
  • 1” disposable foam brush
  • Candy


Step 1. Mix glue and water together in a ratio of 3 parts glue and 1 part water. Mix thoroughly. Dip a strip of newspaper in the glue mixture, wiping excess glue off the paper.

Step 2. Place the strip on the inflated balloon, gently pressing it down flat.

Step 3. Continue adding glue strips to the balloon, covering it completely. Add a few layers and let the balloon dry. Once dry, snip the end of the balloon open to deflate it. The sides of the paper might stick a little to the balloon, but you can stick the end of a wooden spoon in the top and gently pop the sides back out.


Step 4. Carefully cut the bottom of the balloon about 5” horizontally and 5” vertically. This will create 4 flaps.

Step 5. Push the flaps together, to flatten out the bottom of the balloon. Add some glue covered newspaper strips to cover the openings, and let dry.

Step 6. Spray paint the balloon purple and let dry. Add the candy through the opening in the top of the balloon,


Step 7. Place Sofia on the long side of the card stock, overlapping about 1/2”

Step 8. Fold the card stock in half, overlapping Sofia.

Step 9. Tape both sides of the card stock to Sofia.

Step 10. Fold the right side of the card stock in so that it is centered under Sofia.

Step 11. Flip over Sofia, fold the right side in so to match the other side.

Step 12.The card stock should will have an accordion look to it, as shown.


Step 13. Holding the card stock closed, place Sofia into the top of the balloon. When you release the card stock, it will unfold and keep Sofia from coming loose from the balloon.

Step 14. Secure Sofia to the balloon with the purple duct tape.


Step 15. Using the tissue paper that is included with the fluffy Sofia decoration, cut into smaller strips.

Step 16. Starting at the bottom apply a thin strip of the glue/water to the balloon.

Step 17. Add a piece of tissue paper to balloon, the scalloped part of the paper should face down, as shown.

Step 18. Add another piece of tissue paper, overlapping the previous layer, The balloon should start to resemble Sofia’s dress.

Step 19. Continue adding strips of tissue paper to the dress until it’s completely covered. Your piñata is now complete. You can hang the piñata or use as a colorful centerpiece.
