During Halloween, no one is safe from the horror of DIY zombie makeovers, especially kids’ toys! It’s amazing to see what a little paint, a dirty dress, and ok — a hack saw, can do to a beloved toy. We went all zombie outbreak on this hair-styling toy and turned it into something beyond the grave with a few tools and little time. After some customization, drop a bowl inside her hollow head and this child’s play toy becomes anything but playful!

DIY Zombie Candy Bowl Supplies
- Child’s Styling Head Toy (we scored this one at the thrift store for $4!)
- Child’s dress
- Acrylic paint – white, black, green, red, green, yellow
- Assortment of paint brushes
- Small Bowl
- Hack Saw
First, scour the thrift store or ebay for a girls doll or toy that can easily be zombie-fied. Yep, we’re inventing that word. In this case, we found one of those fun “Style her hair” type toys that already stood on its own.
Next, give your doll a mullet. Yep, we went ahead trimmed a good old “business up front, party in the back” hairstyle so the long hair wouldn’t be in the way during our next step.
Grab a hack saw and give her lid a good chop! This hollow space will provide a great area to insert a bowl later.
Let them zombie-fying begin! Cover the body and dress with a mixture of white, green and black paint. Sparsely paint onto the strands of hair to give it that “just got out of the grave” look.
Keep going! Dress your doll in a recycled lace dress, grab your yellow, black, brown and red paint and get even more creepy. Water down brown paint and apply within the dress to make it look dirtier.
Don’t forget the red paint around the eyes or mouth!
Once dry, insert a food-safe the bowl into the hollow head so it can easily hold some party food edibles. Tip: Twizzlers bites look just like chunks of brain!
Talk about a glow up! Looking good zombie girl!
