Sure you could buy leis for a backyard luau, but making your own is fun and can give your party the handmade touch! Include an assortment of paper straws, punched flower shapes, and beads and let kids string them up in any arrangement they wish. Bonus: stringing together bits and pieces is a great activity for hand-eye coordination for kids!
Tara from Spot of Tea Designs put together this tutorial on how to set up a lei making station.
- Paper Straws
- Flower paper punch
- Hole punch
Prepare the materials: use a flower paper punch to punch colorful flower shapes from an assortment of cardstock. Use the hole punch to create a hole in the center.
Cut paper straws in 1 inch pieces.
Tie a knot at one end of cording. Tip: wrap a piece of tape on the other end to help make threading easier for little hands.
Begin threading beads, paper straw pieces and paper flowers through the cording in any arrangement you wish.
Compete threading the full length of the cording, leaving enough room to tie together to form your lei.
Setting up a crafting activity is a great way to add a bonus keepsake to the party favor bag. See the colorful backyard luau Tara put together in our next blog post!
