You can go on debating about Christmas lights if you want to, but we believe they all have a beautiful shine and we can respect their differences. Whether you prefer white lights or multi-color lights, large bulbs or small bulbs I think we can all agree that this string of lights made from cardstock and paper cups is festive as any lights out there. They may not have that electric glow, but their simple design is enlightening in itself.
You can buy all kinds of Christmas decorations for the holidays but sometimes a homemade touch can create something more sentimental. And this could make a great project to do with the family on a Christmas Crafternoon. So, brighten up your holiday décor with this colorful Christmas Lights Garland. Follow along below for the quick and simple tutorial on how to string it all together.
Paper Christmas Lights Garland Supplies
- Silver 9oz paper cups
- Cardstock (blue, yellow, orange, green and red)
- Silver parachute cord
- Pen and ruler
- Hole punch
- Glue gun
- Scoring board (not pictured)
STEP ONE: Trim cups to 1 ½” in height.
STEP TWO: Punch a hole in cup approximately ½” from the top edge. Do the same thing on the opposite side.
STEP THREE: Trim cardstock to 1 ½” x 12”. Punch holes at 1” and 11”, centered on the strip.
STEP FOUR: Score (or fold) strip at ½”, 3”, 6”, 9” and 11 ½”.
STEP FIVE: At score lines, fold the cardstock strip into a bulb shape (see picture for reference).
STEP SIX: Glue the ½” folded sections to the inside top of the cup, making sure holes are aligned.
STEP SEVEN: Thread cord through the holes to string bulbs.
